For instance, when we first inhale one single puff of a cigarette we can turn green and feel as sick as the proverbial dog.
Yet a few weeks later, we can be smoking 20 cigarettes in a day and feeling as cool as James Dean.
Same thing in Victorian times apparently. People would regularly ingest enough poison (Laudanum was popular) to kill an army. But because they had slowly built up tolerance they were fine…all jolly and relaxed.
