Breaking Through Your Glass Ceilings

I’m going to share something astonishing. Something that should make you angry (but in a really positive way).

The kind of way where you can take the Monday bull by the horns and OWN this week. Create the kind of extraordinary plans, personal breakthroughs and high-level adventures you were always supposed to.

Great…

So first a question.

Silicon Valley is all about making money. Right?

I mean all those venture capitalists waving their millions of dollar bills in the air. Funding electric cars and whizzy web apps that warn you ten minutes before you’re going to have a heart attack so you can plug into a DIY heart fix-it machine (powered by the car cigarette lighter socket).

Silicon Valley is about innovation. And again, it’s about making money. Right?

Apparently not.

Here are 3 sobering facts. Together they make for a jaw dropping example of a glass ceiling which would be laughable if it wasn’t so un-funny.

1. Data shows that start-up companies in Silicon Valley with at least one female founder outperformed all-male teams by 63%

2. Only 10% of founders are women

3. Women entrepreneurs receive just 19% of angel funding and even less of venture funding

Now, I would have assumed the 3 pieces of logic above would have the rich investors falling over themselves to fund female entrepreneurs.

But no. Logic loses. Stupidity reigns again.

Make no mistake, glass ceilings are still very real and they are as thick as bulletproof glass.

But they do crack. And they do yield.

And once they are opened they often stay open.

For instance it took Britain 258 years to elect its first woman prime minister.

The gap then closed to 26 years second time around.

Even the USA will elect a woman president. And eventually it will become the norm.

This is exciting. But it can’t be taken for granted.

The truth is that glass ceilings are unconscious. They are insidious.

And to get people to break through them, you need to have all kinds of tricks and strategies up your sleeve.

Above all else, you need to be able to help people grow their self-esteem through the ceiling.

Because, whether you realise it or not, high self-esteem is the big transformation our world is waiting for.

When people feel good about themselves they become like a fertile garden. All kinds of extraordinary things start to grow, blossom and thrive.

And when that happens on a society level, the old rules start to bend and then crumble.

It certainly is an exciting time to be alive.

And it’s a great time for us to push our personal boundaries. To see ourselves for the powerful force for change and empowerment that we are.
